The Blessing That is I.B.I. by Sis. Ritchell Belda

Posted by on Aug 19, 2016 in Blog | 0 comments

To know God is to love God.
That, in a nutshell, is how I describe my IBI journey thus far.

So how did I begin to embark on this journey?
It began about 2 years ago when God awakened my husband and I from our deep slumber. Being born again Christians and serving God in church since we were teenagers in Manila, we thought we ‘knew’ it all. Such arrogance, you might say. Yes, we had loads of that. And as Christians, we all know what happens to the arrogant.

God brought our family to Cebu 3 years ago and attended Living Word Banawa as a favor to my dad. You see, we were back to being practicing Roman Catholics approximately 3 years prior to our move to Cebu. We arrived Cebu in our early 40’s, broken and shattered. Physically tired because of the battles we had to fight. Materially broke. Emotionally drained. And worse of all, we were spiritually confused.

On our first year in Cebu, my dad would bring my husband to the Men’s Small Group meetings every Tuesday. And again, as a favor to my dad, he would oblige. It was through this group that he met a brother who invited us to the Couples Fellowship. These meetings paved the way for us to long for these gathering of believers and study the Word of God. Before long, God began to open our eyes and hearts to the truth and relevance of His Word in our lives once again. This re-awakening brought my husband to Pastor Mel’s office one day where he was encouraged to enrol in IBI so he can be “on the same page” with Living Word. We took this advice to heart and never looked back.
IBI has reminded me of the many wonderful and awesome things in the Word of God. There is so much to learn from God’s Word. And as each story unfolds, we learn more of God’s character; the seriousness of His commands; the consequences of sin; His justice; His wrath; His unending mercy; His unwavering love. Everything we need to know about life is there. One would be surprised, it’s all there! It has never become out dated even to the Millennials. We have a constant God Who remains the same yesterday, today and forever!
This realization has brought me to my knees in repentance. The experience of being able to have a glimpse of how great and big our God is has truly humbled me.
IBI brought me back to my first love.
Thank You IBI! Thank You to our great and mighty King! All glory to You alone!

God Still Works Wonders Today by Lydia Tunacao

Posted by on Jul 5, 2016 in Blog | 0 comments

The Lord still works wonders until this time.
Long before IBI came to existence in Living Word, the Lord placed a prayer in my heart, “Lord please allow this Church to have a Bible School of her own where she can train and equip believers for the work of the ministry, for truly; “the laborers are few and the harvest in plentiful.”
It was a petition borne out of the Holy Spirit. I know, therefore I trusted that God would surely grant the petition. Times passed, I forgot about the prayer, and the time I made the prayer. But one beautiful Sunday morning, as Bro. Mel announced the forth-coming Bible School from London, my heart leaped with joy and recalled the prayer about having a Bible School. God is amazing and truly awesome! One more prayer I made was (this time it was self-motivated) “Lord, I should be in this school, I must!” And indeed, “everyone who trusts in the Lord shall never be disappointed.” “He withholds nothing good from those walk is upright.” (His uprightness). I was enthralled, in my own initiative I partially paid the registration fee and trusted for the remaining balance. But the Lord who never ceases to show Himself strong to those who wait for Him, once again wonderfully made wonders! He not only provided for my first and second courses, but gave and provided a sponsor of whose identity until now is unknown to me. Although I can’t personally thank them, the Lord most certainly knows them by name and will see to it that they’ll never lose their rewards. They that do it secretly shall be rewarded openly, as His promise was written in His words.

It’s not easy to be a correspondent student left by yourself. But the Holy Spirit who is with me and is in me, was my Great Teacher and Facilitator. I only have my Bible with me to refer to for some biblical queries. Should difficult questions arise from the lecture, to find answers, I had to go back again, read and re-read the lectures for the answers. Might be too time consuming, but you can’t find great and priceless pearls from shallow water. You’ll find them in “ear-cracking” depths of the ocean. And so it is when we want to know and learn more from the Holy Spirit.

Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament, that I find myself somewhat “boring” to read especially when my mind was closed and my spirit was lazy, but from this study my mind was opened and my spirit filled with praise for the tremendous truths and insights. I gained from this learning! To mention especially how the Lord Jesus Christ was wonderfully portrayed in Leviticus as the sacrificial Lamb.

I can’t fully relate to you the spiritual blessing obtained from the Great Doctrines of the Bible, but if you are one who desires to know more about God from His Words, and who desire to serve God in the ministry and is contemplating to enroll and yet hesitant for some reasons, why not try our Lord? Up until this time He is still in the business of performing wonderful things for those who believe. Jesus said to Martha: “Did I not tell you, Martha, that if you would believe you will see the glory of God?” If God did it for me, why not for you? I don’t have great faith, I just humbly trusted Him for everything I needed. And every time we trust Him, our needs will not only be met, above all and most importantly, people will see His glory!

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen!” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

A New Beginning by Pastor Jess Caparros

Posted by on Jun 14, 2016 in Blog | 0 comments

More than two years ago, during one conversation with sis Marie, she encouraged us to consider getting an IBI Charter. Silently in prayer I pondered and desired that in the near future our church in Manila might start our own IBI.

There were some questions that made me reflect on our situation then such as, “Can we afford the charter when our church is struggling with financial obligations?” There were times we can barely raise funds for our rental. “Who will volunteer as a staff?” We only have a few workers. “Will there be enrollees? Who can afford the registration and the tuition fee?”
Despite these apprehensions, we saw the hand of God move in a very special and significant way.

November of last year our former members, a newly-wed couple, came back to Manila and expressed their intention to stay in Manila for good, to serve God as they sense His leading. They shared that they enrolled in IBI Butuan and they were part of the staff as well. So when they suggested to get an IBI charter, the desire became a constant yearning for the Lord to answer our prayers.

The next step was to seek for God’s provision. We recently transferred from Monumento to Munoz and our church funds were drained. But with our complete trust in God’s hand to provide, knowing that “God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s provision.” We took a step of faith.

At the start of the new year, a sister in the Lord from Cebu gave an amount of 10,000 pesos for the ministry. We decided to commit this as seed money for the charter. Then later we were informed that another 10,000 will be given specifically for IBI.

Then at the end of January a couple, bro Monching and sis Hanita Tampos, gave a 10,000 check. And in church there was someone who placed in the enveloped 1,500 pesos and indicated that it was specifically intended for the IBI. Praise God! We only needed to raise 3,500 for the complete payment of 35,000. All glory be unto God!

We were overwhelmed by God’s grace when we finally conducted our IBI orientation last February 20, 2016. Truly, it is all by His sovereignty that we were able to facilitate this orientation and we are hopeful and expectant that God will do great and mighty things in the months and years to come. He alone is worthy of all praise and adoration!
Even down to our instructor, He used Sis Hanita Tampos to facilitate the 2:30 pm class every Saturday, starting March 5, 2016.

We now have at least a total of 18 students for our O.T. 101.
Thank you Lord!

Climbing Everests of Prophecy by Bro. Peter Raddatz

Posted by on Jun 14, 2016 in Blog | 0 comments

How Exploring major prophets with Brother Mel opens panoramic perspectives.

Why should city dwellers climb daring summits like the Everest-or any other mountaintops of prophecy? Would the steep ascent after work plus traffic become a mental crawl? The answer is simple: Mountaintops open brand-new perspectives worth the climb, and with a seasoned guide like Brother Mel Caparros climbing may turn into a roller coaster through ancient history, spiced with anecdotes & insights applicable to our own daily climbs of life.

Never is it boring: Armed with humor, colorful powerpoints loaded with graphics & artistic imagery, Brother Mel helped us visualize strange celestial creatures like Ezekiel’s clones of kings & cattle on wheels. Elaborate charts put prophecies from Isaiah to Daniel into its hidden historical context, revealing the last enigma and answering old questions.

Truly, Prophets like Isaiah match the Everest description, taking us from abysmal valleys of condemnation & judgement to mountaintops of panoramic foresight along refreshing wells of comfort & encouragement.

Stunningly accurate prophecies opened our eyes to the great consistency uniting the Old with the New Testament: Isaiah’s precise description of the Messiah-inclusive of John as his catalyst strengthen our faith. Proving the word of God to be truly inspired, since all Major Events were clearly predicted centuries before they came to pass, extending into an otherwise uncharted future.

Why should Christians bother to gain a working knowledge of Major prophecy, sacrificing much needed rest during Evening classes? Because Prophets like Jeremiah teach us to see success from God’s long term perspective rather than myopic worldly views. Daniel encourages us to stand for what is right in a world of unbelief and compromise. Prophets like Daniel teach us about the rewards of becoming men & women of prayer: they help us see the world from God’s perspective rather than the world’s distorted perspective.

Panoramic views across kingdoms and eras provide insights into God’s ultimate Kingdom, reassuring us that our God is very much in control of world events, using Super powers to accomplish His overall purpose. Thus the study of the Major prophets offers something for everybody, from the micro to macro-perspectives, from deep personal insights about the relationship between God & us, to the overarching mega-themes of History (Gods Kingdom). Lessons that encourage us to dig deeper into the word of God & to understand events, small and big in the larger context of Gods Overall Kingdom plan.

Thank you Brother Mel, for making the Everest accessible to all of us!

THE REASON WHY I ENROLLED IN I.B.I. by Adrian S. Kuizon

Posted by on Nov 26, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

Good day everyone.
I am very honored to be chosen to share about my experience regarding International Bible Institute (IBI). I first heard about IBI way back 2009 and I was interested in taking classes because I wanted to know more about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. However, I guess the time was not yet right. It took 6 years before I was finally able to enroll in my first course which happened to be the Great Doctrines of the Christian Faith 301-1.
Another compelling reason for me to take the GD 301-1 is because it has always been a challenge for me to answer those who ask me why we should believe the writings in the Great Book which is the Bible. For even if I know that the teachings of the Bible are profound, I am always at a loss for words how to make others understand what is in my heart and thoughts. And it is by providence that Lecture 1 was about “Why we believe the Bible?” Through Tita Issa Cusi, I have learned the fundamentals that the Bible has 66 books written in 3 different languages by 40 different authors over a span of approximately 1500 years. These facts alone make the Bible one of a kind! However, what is more remarkable is that it maintains perfect consistency or without conflict all throughout. That just shows that all the different authors have been guided by the grace of God to come up with this amazing book which teaches the Word of God and remains relevant through generations.
A month after I enrolled in IBI, I experienced a trial in my life. Looking back, I can say that I was in critical condition because my platelet count (the component of the blood that causes clotting) was really low and I was put on bed rest because I might bleed anytime. I will be lying if I said that I was not afraid. It is only when I turned to the Word of God that I felt myself getting stronger, overpowering the disease that I had in my body. While I was confined to my bed, I kept reading the Bible so fear and weakness will not creep in my thoughts. What gave me even greater strength was the support I received not only by my family and friends but also by my brothers and sisters in our Church. I was specifically touched by the visit of Pastor Mel and his family because through my conversation with them I have been enlightened more that my decision to enroll in IBI was correct. Through God’s grace, I was able to hurdle through my illness. And I was able to complete GD 301-1. And because of what I have learned and experienced, I was encouraged to continue my learning journey.
Currently I am taking up the Life of Christ under Pastor Gary Jayme. And next on my list is Old Testament (OT) 106. Through these classes I am slowly gaining the knowledge I have been hungering for. Praise the Lord for IBI. To God be all the glory, honor and praise.

The Great Daily Verses of God by Bro. Michael Eparwa

Posted by on Nov 26, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

It has truly been a life-changing experience to learn in IBI. The scripture, translating scripture
methodology has given me quite a light and deeper understanding and it has helped me a lot in
how I share the word of God. Truly it is quite different if you are reading and understanding the
word of God in His perspective and not in our own knowledge and understanding.
The books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon and Lamentations are the
books that I should say contained the daily wisdom that we need in making decisions according
to God’s choice of thinking and action. In a way this has answered tons of questions that a
Christian faces everyday. Some of this questions are:
Why do good people suffer?
How do we recognize God’s answer to our prayer?
What is God’s take on how we should raise our children or
how we should show our respect to our parents?
How do we distinguish vanity from enjoying the blessings of God?
What does it really mean to love a person inside and out?
What makes God angry?
Why is God always forgiving us and not hating us?
Truly our God is faithful, loving, merciful, understanding and just at all times that in this books
He gave the answers to this common questions that rings with all truth not just in the past but
very much applicable until today.
In the book of Job, we learned that God only allows things to happen to achieve His purpose for
us. In the book of Psalms, we learned how the heart of God truly feels for us and He how it longs
to have that relationship with us. In the book of Proverbs, we are taught the implications of our
actions if we don’t seek the wisdom of God in our daily walk in life. In the book of Ecclesiastes,
it is plainly laid unto us the things that we think is acceptable and yet it already breeds envy,
pride and vanity that will eventually separate us from God. In the Songs of Solomon, it is painted
for us vividly the relentless truths in loving a person, and in understanding all this, there is a hope
for all of us to recognize how Christ graciously love’s us. In Lamentations, though it begins with
foul breath of wrath and destruction but you can still see the ray of hope which is felt in the
warmth embrace of God’s faithfulness.
In this life you either accept and learn God’s wisdom or walk in darkness blindly but one thing is
most assuring is that God truly loves us and He will be forever faithful! It is just up to us, if we
will give him a chance to change our lives, towards its greater and rightful purpose. We are to
worship Him with all of our hearts therefore our hearts must be ‘rightly’ tuned with His.

God’s Character over the Created Characters – By Pastor Ariel Talledo

Posted by on Sep 2, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

A certain quote from a unanimous person saying “we study for the sake of accuracy”. Indeed, accuracy is one of my goal why i decided to enroll IBI way back 2012. I believe that there are more things for me to learn in the bible school rather than merely self-study. Truthfully speaking, it helps me a lot and even augments my faith in trusting God more and more by learning true biblical knowledge through the lessons offered in the International Bible Institute.

By God’s grace, I am down to my last three subjects and I’m going to graduate, but that’s not my aim. I aim to know Him more and to grow in my relationship with Jesus and I’m so sure that IBI helped me through it. I realized and brought to this perspective that life is a life-long bible study. I usually do various studies but during my survey of the Bible, it became effectively notable for me about the stubborness of man and most of all the amazing character of God towards His created beings.

Attributing God, He is always at work and even today He is working in our characters and He is working in us for life. I found suitable to share with you this subject OT104 for I considered it as one of my most amazing subjects! It is a whole package of the Old Testament survey on how the Lord work upon each of His chosen people from generation to generation. It also re-views the 5 books written by Moses, the Judges and Kings, Israel’s history, pre and post exilic periods, major and minor prophets including their poetries are comprised in one great subject!

The OT 104 also covers the post exilic period where we can see the working of God upon Israel through Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther and all the minor prophets. In this study, it also signaled the coming 400 silent years of God because of the stubbornness of the tribes of Israel. The reviews of OT 101 to OT 103 have tremendously helped me to understand the whole story from creation to separation, from Genesis to 2 Chronicles took a great span of time! The writings were approximately done in 1260 BC to 538 BC. Through these books, we can clearly see the attributes of the Almighty God, on how He dealt with His people justly and faithfully despite their being obstinate.

In conclusion, the OT 104 is an interesting and exciting subject of the IBI! Just imagine, 39 Old Testament books in one subject yet uncompromised general view! I thank God for this wonderdul opportunity to share with you these marvelous experiences from Him.

The Heart Changing Experience Through I.B.I. – By Leo S. Arago

Posted by on Aug 12, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

When I and my wife, Eva, learned about IBI School and what it offers, we did not have a second thought of enrolling and joining the classes, starting with 101 up to 104. As members of the Gideons International, a ministry that gives free bibles to men & women, boys & girls of all walks of life, we were challenged/encouraged to study and learn more on the Word of God – the Bible, which we have lifetime committed to distribute.

We came to know how the book of the Old Testament is related to the book of the New Testament, how God has planned and arranged situations, preserved His people for the Messiah to come.

OT 104, the study of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther showed us that God never forgets his people. After 70 long years of exile, God fulfilled his promise to bring them back to the promise land.

Ezra has opened our eyes. He was a man who fully depended on God. Before anything has to be decided or done, he would fast and pray for days. As described in the bible, Ezra was a “Man of the Heart”. He applied God’s word to his life before preaching it to the people. This has led us to study and learn more about the bible, starting with OT 101 to make us equipped and confident, not just to distribute the bibles but to share the word of God as well.

Likewise with Nehemiah, he is considered as the “Man of Action”. Chapter 4:14 “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight …” We are not only to pray but also do/act according to God’s plan. Let us always remember that God never overlooks our labor done in LOVE for God. So, in whatever struggles, hardships and trials we are in, we can overcome them. Whatever plans we have, we can be successful if we turn to God for guidance and help.

When Ezra read God’s law to the people, they came to realize their sins, they wept and repented. The power of God’s Word moved them, convicted them and changed them. They started praising and worshipping God.

Let us not forget that we were all changed by the power of God’s Word. Every time we come to a point wherein we are troubled, put in a hot seat or get in a miserable situation, let us always remember that God is the turning point. God is the solution – His Powerful Words.

Can you recall the times when God’s word has been powerful in your life? Can you recall how it has changed you or the situation you were in?

Studying OT 101-104 has wonderfully taught us who really GOD is, His great and amazing love to His people. We are so privileged to receive God’s grace and His unconditional love. Thank You Lord for this opportunity to know more about YOU! We look forward to more exciting lessons in the next classes to come. Thanks to IBI School, to Pastor Mel and to the staff!
God bless us all IBI students. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

What I Learned in OT-103 (The Kingdom Period) – By: Sis. Mathel Bacaltos

What I Learned in OT-103 (The Kingdom Period) – By: Sis. Mathel Bacaltos

Seven or eight years ago I was invited to enroll in IBI but I declined, had many excuses and thought of doing self-study.  Last year, the Lord gave me a deep desire to know Him more and impressed in my heart to finally enroll in IBI and so I did.  After just three courses, there is much that I have realized about the character of God.  I am very grateful to our God that our church is offering IBI.  I could say I really missed a lot for delaying.  In OT 103, my eyes were opened to the seriousness of God’s holiness, the importance of following His instructions and the depth of man’s depravity.

Many times, I have not esteemed the presence of God in reverence and fear.    When Israel asked God for an earthly king, it must have been heart-breaking to God.  That rejection was enough proof of how they disrespected and undervalued God as king.  Although God really intended for Israel to have an earthly king (Deut 17:14-20) that was not yet the time but Israel was stubborn, they wanted so much to be like the other nations and could wait no more.  How could they be so impatient and demanding? How could they replace God with an earthly creature?  I was too quick to judge them but removing the blinders from my spiritual eyes, God showed me I too, for many times, have been in similar situations.  I have demanded God for earthly things, like a specific job or forcing Him to bless me with a particular object, I thought I knew better but receiving what I asked only messed up my life in the end.

The Ark of the Covenant represents the presence of God in the OT.  When Uzzah was struck dead for touching the ark to keep it from falling, which is a good intention, I really didn’t understand and I used to think that God was being too hard or inconsiderate.  But God made me see and realize that His very presence, His Holiness is indeed too much for us, unholy beings to see or touch.  There was wisdom in God’s instructions to Moses that the Ark should be carried with a pole for we could die if we behold and touched His holiness. If only the people of Israel kept in their heart this instruction then they wouldn’t have made a mistake in putting the Ark on a cart.  This realization encouraged me to be very careful in obeying every detail of God’s instructions to us. reminded me of the line “obedience is better than sacrifice”. And I am just so amazed at what Christ has done for us.  Jesus’ blood has covered all our past, present and future sins, for God sees only Jesus’ righteousness in me, and has made it possible for us to enter His holy presence.  It amazes me that Jesus has not only cleansed and washed me but now His very presence resides in my heart and that makes me more conscious and constant in examining my heart if it is indeed revering our Holy God.

The lives of the kings of Israel is teaching us that the secret of blessings is obedience and abiding in the Lord.  And that sufferings and curses are results of disobedience.  Many of the kings started well, following God’s ways but along the way when all was well, they fell into sin.  And there were kings who from the beginning where already going against God.  There was no perfect king, all failed, just like us, we too have sinful and depraved hearts and are very much in need of a Savior and Lord to rule our wandering hearts.  Looking at David, we see how blessed he was when he walked in the ways of the Lord, but when he disobeyed, the consequences of his sin were great and even involved bloodshed.  How could he be called a man after God’s own heart? For a man after God’s own heart means being all out for God, wholly devoted to God, having strong faith in God and being fully dependent on God.  David may not have been perfect but his life shows us examples that described him to be such.  When He fought Goliath, his confidence was not on himself but on God.  With regards to his enemies, he always allowed God to vindicate him and did not take vengeance.  When the Prophet Nathan confronted him of his sin of adultery and murder, he made no excuses nor pointed his fingers on anyone, he just confessed declaring that he sinned against God.   In the Psalms, we read how he longed and found rest in the presence of the Lord, how God is his exceeding joy and his portion.  He poured out his heart to God, this way of communicating with God shows us their intimate relationship.  I enrolled in IBI to know God more and together with that, my prayer is to have a heart like David, to have that kind of intimacy with God for the remaining days of my life.

Personal Evangelism: The Good Work for Christ

Posted by on Apr 21, 2015 in Blog | 0 comments

By: Dr. Johann Hugo

‘Whenever I pray, I make my request for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good news about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.’ (Philippians 1:4-6). I can still vividly remember the time when Sister Marie spoke about these verses during the orientation night of our IBI course way back 3 years ago. I kept it to myself that a day will come that there will be the unfolding of the message in verse 6 “And I am certain that God who began the good work”, although the context of this verse is salvation.  However, if I will relate it with my journey in IBI and ask myself what is the ‘good work’, I would say that it is about personal witnessing and soul winning.   It is leading others to Christ and to look at ourselves in relation to the blessed task and the glorious privilege that awaits us as workers together with God in His great harvest field.

I’d like to share the definition of ‘Evangelism’ based on the lesson that we had.  According to Dr. Carlton Booth, the word ‘Evangelism’ means “to present Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit that men shall put their trust in God through Him and accepting Him as their Lord, seek to serve Him in the fellowship of His church.” It is an individual reaching for other individuals. Christ began His ministry by approaching individuals to follow Him. Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” Andrew responded immediately without hesitation, bringing along Peter his brother to follow Christ. Have you ever wondered why God through Christ Jesus came into this world? Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

It took a while for me to enroll in Personal Evangelism because I’m the shy type of guy.   I find it hard to reach out to others and evangelize for I feel that my knowledge is not enough to share the Gospel of truth about Christ. I am afraid that I may be humiliated and ridiculed in front of the many friends that I have. This kind of thinking that I had proved me wrong for it says in Luke 1:37 “Nothing is impossible with God”. He will equip us with His word in sharing the Gospel and we can say with confidence that the Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

Finishing the course of Personal Evangelism has changed my views and perspective in my knowledge of Christ Jesus. It’s a very challenging task.  We need to continually sow the seeds of the Gospel so that in due time we may reap a great harvest of souls. He wants us to do things that will have an eternal impact. He wants us to be part in expanding His kingdom.  In short, He wants us to “Multiply”, to get us in the habit of passing to others what we have learned about the Gospel. We are made accountable for what we have done for Him. Matthew 10:32 Jesus said “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.”

To you my brothers and sisters out there to whom God has called into the ministry, I encourage you to enroll with no hesitation and be more knowledgeable about Personal Evangelism. To my classmates we are now commissioned to go out there and look for an individual that we can lead to Christ, not just one but as many as we can while we are still able to evangelize the word of God.  To Pastor Mel and Sister Marie, Bro. Edwin and Sis. April and to Sis. Jedilyn, we pray that God will always bless you and to continue His good works on your undying service to God. To God alone be the glory.
